Protecting the Green Sea Turtle

Queensland Community Development Officers, Gwen and Eddie, traveled to Townsville to meet with the Gudjuda Reference Group and Rangers, who represent the Bindal, Jaru and Ngaro Traditional Owners groups from Ayr.

The Gudjuda Rangers are responsible for protecting the Green Sea Turtle. They collaborate with James Cook University and Queensland Parks and Wildlife to protect this endangered species. The Rangers catch the turtles, measure their weight and tag them before returning them to the sea, so their progress can be tracked.

The Gudjuda Reference Group and Rangers invited Community First Development (formerly Indigenous Community Volunteers) to help plan their strategy for the next 5-10 years as they continue their work to protect the Green Sea Turtle.
